Rhys began his work as a lighting designer while in high school, at Mazenod College in Lesmurdie. Upon graduation, he began his tertiary study at the Western Australian Academy of Performing arts. During his time their, he worked on over 20 productions, and acted as a lighting designer on 7 of these.
